The U.K. Subs + Knock Off + In Evil Hour + Guitar Gangsters at North East Calling in Newcastle on 19 October 2024.
I had a great time at North East Calling Festival 2024 in Newcastle. My second time at this nice little festival, well organised, despite the big queues for the bars at times. Friendly security helping crowd surfers across the barrier during the Subs set.
I rather enjoy the set by Guitar Gangsters. Opening the proceedings during the early afternoon, they play a set of no frills punk rock and roll and very well done too. Not a band that I really knew before this week, but they do claim themselves to be the best kept secret in punk rock for the past 10 years. So, keep it to yourselves. 🙂
Another highlight of the festival in Newcastle, is the brilliant In Evil Hour. A blistering set, despite being on early in the afternoon. Great band. If you don’t know them, a crossover punk/hardcore sound. It always surprises me that such a voice can come out of someone so petite.
Alice can belt it out with the best of them.
The brilliant Knock Off are definitely one of my highlights of the day. Despite them arriving only 15 minutes or so before they are due to go on stage, they play a great set. Quite a few people who it appeared hadn’t see them before were saying positive things about them afterwards, so they have picked up a few new fans. Looking forward to seeing g them again in Essen (DE) and Vorselaar (BE) in December.
And finally on to the mighty UK Subs. My third and final Subs gig of the week, all of which were different in their own way (venue, audience, atmosphere) but all highly enjoyable. The next time I see them will be in Freiburg in Germany next month, where I will be playing with my band Down Yer Pint as opening support band.
