The Mistakes in Southampton in October 2023.

In the UK for family reasons with my son, and I see that one of my favourite “new” punk rock bands, The Mistakes from Poole, are celebrating the official release of their latest album down the road in Southampton. So, we decide to extend our stay by a couple of days to make the short trek to Soton to see them.

Whilst this evening is the official release of the album, “A Good Hill To Die On”, the songs have already been made available on social media for a few weeks now. And what a great album it is, with my personal favourite tacks being the title track, ‘Chaos Theory’ and ‘Heathens’. We make the 30 minute train journey to Southampton, check in and make our way to the venue.

First up is Sinful Maggie, also from Dorset like the headliners, who make an accordion sound cool. A great live band with a Celtic feel to their music, despite their song entitled ‘We’re Not Fuckin’ Irish’ 🙂

Next up is Something Bitter, all the way from NYC. The guitarist is from the South of England and has a connection with The Mistakes, hence the link up for this and other shows whilst they are over. We really enjoy their set, and my son has their songs on repeat for most of the next day.

Then the Mistakes from Poole take the stage for a blistering run through the tracks on the new album and some older numbers, interspersed with good-humoured banter with the audience. The songs from the new album sound really good live, so definitely worth taking a listen to the album.

Great bands, great venue and great audience. We will be seeing all 3 bands again on Sunday at Never Be Quiet Fest in Poole.
