GBH + Others at Punk for Pam festival at the Star and Garter, Manchester on 24 February 2024

Had an absolutely fantastic afternoon/evening at the Star and Garter pub in Manchester at Punk For Pam festival. I enjoyed every band that I saw and such a friendly crowd too.

Punk For Pam is a charity event that takes place in Edinburgh and other cities in memory of Pam Blyth, sister of GBH guitarist Jock. So a very good cause, as well as a great line up of bands on the bill. This, my first time at the Star and Garter pub, gave me the opportunity to see the Ian Curtis mural painted on the side of the building. The original photo on which the mural is based was taken by a mate of mine, Belgian photographer Philippe Carly (check out his gig photos – inspiring stuff).

A summary of the bands that I caught:

The Vile: A brilliant band that includes the singer and the drummer of the Varukers, who I have seen a number of times. However, this was the first time that I had managed to catch The Vile and I loved them. Very hardcore punk sound and Rat Martin is always a very entertaining frontman. Recommended.

Spunk Volcano and the Eruptions: Another band that I have seen a few times and they have always impressed me. Despite the silly garb and often humorous lyrics, they have a great sound and very memorable tunes. Check out their song “XR3” to get an idea of what I’m talking about.

Knock Off: One of my favourite Street Punk bands at the moment. I was a fairly latecomer to the band, only discovering them a few years ago. But I have been playing all of their albums on a regular basis in my car on the long journeys to gig. Check out the track “This Ain’t No Love Song” which is one of my faves.

Drongos For Europe: As above, another of my current favourites. I’ve seen them several times and love them. They have an obvious connection with GBH, as both bands come from the same neck of the woods and are evidently mates, so natural that they should appear on the bill at this special event.

GBH: Clearly one of my favourite punk bands of all time, and they played a great set, despite a rather chaotic ending. Great to see Ross back on bass duties. At one point, drummer Scott got up and left the stage, to be replaced at very short notice by the drummer of Drongos for Europe. It turned out that Scott was suffering with some broken ribs but decided that he was fit enough to carry on with the gig despite indications to the contrary. It soon became clear to him that the pain was too much, but he soldiered on until he couldn’t take any more. Good man. Hope you’re feeling better now Scott.
