TV Smith & The Bored Teenagers, Monheim, February 2024

TV Smith and The Bored Teenagers at Sojus 7 in Monheim, Germany on 3 February 2024.

I first heard The Adverts back in 1976 or 1977, probably on the John Peel radio show in the U.K. It was most likely one of their early singles, either ‘Safety In Numbers’ or ‘No Time To Be 21’ and I was immediately hooked. I distinctly remember buying ‘Gary Gilmore’s Eyes as a single when it first came out and playing it to death. Their first album, ‘Crossing the Red Sea with the Adverts’ (on red vinyl) was one of my favourites back in the day and still remains one of my all-time punk favourites today, getting regular spins on the turntable.

It’s not often that you get to hear these songs played by a full band nowadays, so I was really excited when I found out that Tim (TV) would be playing with the Bored Teenagers in Monheim-Am-Rhein in Germany, only a few hours away from me.

The Bored Teenagers are composed of 3 musicians based in Spain, 2 of whom play in Spanish band Suzy & Los Quattro. The drummer is very well known to me, as he has been the drummer with the U.K. Subs for the past few years.

I don’t hide the fact that I love the music of the Adverts, and the songs of TV Smith, one of my all-time punk heroes. So, I was in my element at the front of the gig, singing loudly along with the classics such as “No Time To Be 21”, “The Great British Mistake” and, of course “Bored Teenagers”. Great stuff.
